Research Facilitation Committee
The Research Facilitation Committee (RFC) of ACM India Council is dedicated to enabling research activities and improving the quality of research for students and industry professionals. The RFC achieves this through a comprehensive portfolio of initiatives, including Research Opportunities in Computer Science (ROCS), PhD Clinics, Anveshan Setu, and the ACM-I IARCS Travel Grants Committee. It also manages the Research Mentoring Portal (RMP) and handles Conference/Workshop Approvals and the Research Facilitation Grant.
Research Opportunities in CS (ROCS)
For Undergraduate Students
A one day outreach event that brings 4-5 research talks across multiple CS areas directly to undergraduate colleges. The goal is to spark research interest among students who may not yet have exposure to cutting-edge computing work happening in India.
- Objective: nspire undergraduate and postgraduate students to consider research careers in academia or industry.
- Format: Institution-hosted, one-day event with expert talks.
- Who can apply: Institutions wishing to organise a ROCS event at their campus.
PHD Clinic
For PhD Students
A structured mentoring program where CS PhD students across India get dedicated one-on-one sessions with expert mentors from top institutes and industry. Unlike broader portals, PhD Clinic focuses on specific, actionable feedback on your ongoing research ~ not just career advice.
- Objective: Provide targeted, individual feedback on thesis research and problem-solving.
- Format: Monthly one-on-one mentor sessions; students select mentors by research area.
- Who can apply: CS PhD students enrolled at Indian institutions.
Anveshan Setu Fellowship
For PhD Students
A residential fellowship that enables PhD students to spend ~4 weeks at a leading host institution in India, immersing themselves in a different research group's environment. Unlike the PhD Clinic (which is remote and one-on-one), Anveshan Setu is about in-person group immersion - attending lab meetings, collaborating on problems, and experiencing research culture first-hand.
- Objective: Deepen research exposure through short-term immersive visits to top research groups.
- Format: ~4-week on-site visit at a host mentor's institution.
- Who can apply: CS / IT PhD students at Indian institutions.
ARCS Symposium
For PhD Scholars & Early-Career Researchers
An annual national symposium bringing together PhD scholars, faculty, and industry leaders for talks, poster presentations, and career sessions. Features addresses by ACM India Doctoral Dissertation Award and Early Career Research Award recipients, plus a keynote from an eminent researcher.
- Objective: Create a premier forum for PhD students to present work and engage with the broader research community.
- Format: Annual symposium with contributed talks, posters, and special sessions.
- Who can apply: PhD scholars and researchers in CS and related disciplines.
ACM India–IARCS Travel Grant
For Students & Faculty at Indian Institutions
Partial financial support for students and faculty to attend and present at leading international computing conferences. Covers travel, registration, and accommodation costs - helping ensure that promising Indian researchers can participate in global research conversations.
- Objective: Encourage Indian researchers to present and network at top international venues.
- Format: Financial grant; applications evaluated by committee.
- Who can apply: Students and faculty from academic institutions in India presenting at international conferences.
Research Facilitation Grant
For PhD / Master's Students, Postdocs & Early-Career Faculty
Financial assistance targeted at researchers from institutions with limited funding. Covers open-access publication charges, page charges for top-tier venues, and participation costs for invitation-only seminars, workshops, and research schools - removing financial barriers to research dissemination.
- Objective: Remove financial barriers that prevent quality research from reaching global audiences.
- Format: Grant for publication costs, event participation, or workshop fees.
- Who can apply: PhD / Master's (thesis) students, postdocs, and early-career faculty, especially from resource-constrained institutions.
IndiCS
For Researchers, Practitioners & Advanced Students
The IndiCS (Computer Science Seminars in India) series is an initiative of ACM India aimed at promoting high-quality research interactions among researchers, practitioners, and advanced students on frontier topics in computer science. IndiCS provides an immersive environment where participants stay together and engage in intensive discussions, presentations, and collaborations.
- Objective: Foster high-quality research interactions and collaborations on emerging CS topics.
- Format: Residential seminar with presentations, discussions, and collaborative sessions.
- Who can apply: Researchers, practitioners, and advanced students working on the seminar's focus area.
Research Mentoring Portal
For Undergraduates, Pre-PhD & Early PhD Students
A searchable portal connecting students with experienced mentors for guidance on research direction, PhD preparation, and computing careers. Unlike the PhD Clinic (focused on active PhD thesis work), this portal is the right starting point for students still exploring whether and how to enter research.
- Objective: Help students explore research paths and make informed decisions about PhD studies and research careers.
- Format: Online portal; students browse mentor profiles and request guidance sessions.
- Who can apply: Undergraduate and early-stage students exploring research, PhD preparation, or computing careers.
